There’s a specific kind of week that’s hard to describe until you’ve lived it. Morning surf sessions in warm Atlantic water, yoga on a rooftop as the sun sets over the ocean, shared meals with people who were strangers on Monday and feel like old friends by Friday. That’s what a surf and yoga retreat in Morocco feels like — and in October, it’s at its absolute best.
This article covers everything you need to know: why October works so well, what a typical day looks like, who this kind of retreat is for, and how to make it happen.
Why Morocco for a Surf and Yoga Retreat?
Morocco has been on the surf world’s radar for decades, but it’s only recently that the surf and yoga retreat format has taken off here in a serious way. The reason is simple: the conditions are almost uniquely well-suited to combining both.
Unlike Bali or Costa Rica — the other classic surf and yoga destinations — Morocco offers something different. The Atlantic gives you more powerful, progressive waves that actually teach you something as a surfer. The culture is warm but not overwhelming. The food is extraordinary. And the cost of a quality all-inclusive retreat is significantly lower than comparable experiences in Southeast Asia.
Taghazout, the small fishing-turned-surf village 20 kilometres north of Agadir, sits at the centre of all of this. It has the waves, the infrastructure, and the community that make a retreat feel effortless rather than organised.
Why October Specifically?
October is when everything aligns in Taghazout.
The waves: North Atlantic storm season begins in September and builds through October. By mid-October you’re seeing consistent 1.5–2.5 metre swells at the main breaks — powerful enough to be genuinely exciting for beginners catching their first green waves, and technical enough to challenge intermediate surfers who want to work on turns and positioning. The waves have shape. They hold up. They reward good technique.
The weather: October air temperatures sit between 23–27°C. The sea is still warm from summer — around 20–21°C — meaning you can surf in a 3/2mm wetsuit without feeling cold. There’s almost no rain. The light in October is golden and long, which makes the rooftop yoga sessions at sunset genuinely beautiful rather than just practical.
The crowds: Summer’s tourists are gone. The lineups are manageable. The town itself feels calmer and more local. You’re not competing for waves with dozens of other surfers, which means your instructors can actually coach you rather than just keep you safe.
The people: October draws a specific type of traveller — people who’ve done their research, who want a genuine experience rather than a party, and who are open to what a week like this can offer. The group dynamic in October retreats is consistently one of the best of the year.
What a Typical Day Looks Like
This is the version that tends to surprise people — not because it’s extreme, but because it flows so naturally.
Morning: Breakfast at 8:30. Homemade bread, fresh fruit, eggs, coffee. The kind of breakfast that actually sets you up for physical activity rather than sending you back to sleep.
Surf session: We leave for the beach at 9:00. Your instructor has checked the forecast and conditions the night before and chosen the right spot for your group’s level. Sessions run for two hours. You’ll spend the first 20 minutes on the sand going through technique — paddle timing, pop-up mechanics, foot positioning — and the rest of the time in the water. By the end of the week, most beginners are catching and riding waves consistently. Intermediate surfers are working on frontside turns and reading sets.
Midday: Back at the camp by noon. Lunch is served — tagine, couscous, fresh salads, the kind of food that makes you realise Moroccan cuisine is genuinely one of the best in the world. You have the afternoon free: sleep, explore the village, wander down to the café at Panoramas beach, or join an optional second surf session if you can’t get enough.
Late afternoon — yoga: At 16:30 or 17:00 depending on sunset, the yoga session begins on the rooftop. One hour. The focus is on the body you’ve been using all day — hip flexors, shoulders, lower back, ankles. It’s not Instagram yoga. It’s restorative, grounding, and genuinely useful for surfers. The view of the Atlantic from up there as the light drops is the kind of thing you’ll still be thinking about six months later.
Evening: Dinner at 7:30. The table fills up. People share what happened in the water that day, recommend cafés they found, plan excursions. Some nights there’s music in the village. Some nights you sit on the roof. The pace is slow in the best possible way.

Who Is This Retreat For?
The honest answer: a wider range of people than you might expect.
Complete beginners: Around 70% of guests at a retreat like this have never surfed before. The format is specifically designed for people starting from zero — small groups, patient instructors, carefully chosen beginner-friendly waves. Most people stand up on the board on day one.
Intermediate surfers: If you’ve surfed a few times and want to break through a plateau, a week of structured sessions with daily feedback and video review (available on request) will move you forward faster than a month of independent surfing.
Yoga practitioners: The retreat isn’t primarily a yoga retreat — but if yoga is already part of your life, the combination with surfing is genuinely complementary. The physical demands of surfing and the restorative nature of yoga work together in a way that leaves you feeling physically better at the end of the week than when you arrived.
Solo travellers: Our October retreats typically include people travelling alone from the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia. You will not feel alone. The group format means you arrive as a stranger and leave with people you’ll stay in touch with.
Couples and small groups: The room options (double, twin, triple) make this easy to organise for two people or a small group of friends. The group discount (5% for 4–6 people, 10% for 7–10) makes it financially worth organising a group.
The Quad Biking Excursion
One thing that consistently gets mentioned in guest reviews is the quad biking afternoon. It’s not what you expect from a surf and yoga retreat — but it’s one of the highlights of the week.
The route takes you into the mountains above Taghazout, past argan trees and Berber villages, along ridgelines with views over the Atlantic. One hour. The adrenaline of the ride followed by the views makes it a completely different experience from anything else in the week — and a good reminder that Morocco has more to offer than just the coastline.
The GNAWA Farewell Night
The last evening of the retreat ends with a GNAWA music performance. Gnawa is a traditional Moroccan music style with roots in sub-Saharan Africa — hypnotic rhythms, call-and-response singing, the guembri bass lute. It’s been on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list since 2019.
Sharing that music with the group on the last night — after a week of waves and meals and yoga and excursions — is the kind of ending that feels right. It gives the week a sense of completion that a normal “last night dinner” simply doesn’t.
